Father Miguel D’Escoto launches his new book in Managua

2009-07-23 | In the midst of playing an active role in trying to resolve the political crisis in Honduras following the coup against President Zelaya, the current president of the UN General Assembly Father Miguel D’Escoto flew back to Nicaragua on July 17 to launch his new book published by Ocean Sur.

Antiimperialismo y noviolencia (Anti-imperialism and nonviolence) is a selection of lectures, articles, and reflections by the Catholic priest and former foreign minister in the Sandinista government.

In his introduction, Father D’Escoto explains the object of his book is to “help raise awareness about the nonviolence of Jesus and militant anti-imperialism. We want to promote among every follower of Jesus the need for nonviolence in the struggle against imperialism, while recognizing the violent, criminal, and terrorist nature of imperialism.

A well-known liberation theologist, Father D’Escoto argues “to attain the resurrection you have to go through the insurrection against injustice and oppression.”  Drawing on Christianity’s tradition of nonviolence, his book references the experiences of  Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Tolstoy, while also criticizing President George Bush’s warmongering and manipulation of religion for political ends.

One of Father D’Escoto’s most significant achievements as Nicaragua’s foreign minister from 1979 to 1990 was the successful appeal to the International Court of Justice which condemned Washington’s dirty war against his country–the first time the United States had been convicted of terrorist aggression.

“One cannot call oneself a democrat while at the same time supporting the murderous and terrorist policy of the Empire that seeks to impose its will by force of arms and always seeks to isolate economically those countries that bravely defend their sovereignty and right to self determination,” says Father D’Escoto, while expressing his hope that his book might contribute to attaining that world of peace and solidarity yearned for by so many on the planet.
